  • SUV conversion project #5 using a 2014 VXR 1.8 engine for the transplant plus 30 gallon fuel tank.

This customer wants a 30 gallon fuel tank installed along with the 1.8 Yamaha engine. I like his way of thinking. The SUV has been doped off and checked into the shop. The donor ski will come as soon as we call for it, it is waiting in standby mode.

I have ordered a new steering cable for this SUV, the original one feels tight and hard to turn.
The cable arrived and is the wrong cable. The supplier has sent out another one and should arrive soon.

I have the donor now and did take it out for a quick test ride. It seemed to run OK but I think that it had a miss and idled a little rough. My thoughts on this is that the gas could be old and the is no intake air box on the engine and the exhaust system has been modified and now contains some white PVC pipe. The ski did get up to 65 MPH on the guage and I think that it is time to pull the drive-train from the VXR, I think the SUV is starting to fade fast and needs the transplant soon.

I have watched the video again and now believe that the miss I was think the ski had was at the point in the video where I turned around and now I think that the skip was the rev limiter doing its job. The rpm red line is lower on these engines than the FX1100 that I am use to.

I do have the VXR striped down and have all the parts that we will need for the SUV conversion removed.
Here is some pictures of the parts I will be using from the 2014 VXR.

Re: SUV conversion project #5 using a 2014 VXR 1.8 engine for the transplant.

I have the intermediate shaft assembly together and ready to go in the SUV conversion.
The bearing housing from the SUV intermediate shaft is cleaned and bead blasted and reused and will need to have the inside machined out to 1.250 inch for clearance for the larger diameter intermediate shaft.
When the two bearing housings are put together the gasket sealing area is not a perfect fit because the VXR housing is a little larger than the SUV housing so I used some 5200 sealant in that area to ensure a good seal.

I have been working on fitting the 30 gallon fuel tank in the SUV hull. Here is what I have as of now.

I have set the 1.8 engine in the SUV hull to see what needs to be removed to fit the engine. I will say that this 1.8 engine is wider and will require more inner hull to be cut out and the oil pump is on the front of the engine so there will be more inner hull removed for clearance there.

I have cut out the inner hull and set the 1.8 engine back in the SUV hull to do more checking.
I believe that I have a solution for connecting the exhaust to the water box without modifying the engine exhaust.
The exhaust exits more to the port side than the SUV so I had to cut out more of the bulkhead in that area.
I can modify the water box to fit the 1.8 engine.

Here are some pictures of the area of the inner hull that I have cut out for the new 30 gallon fuel tank.
I have almost forgotten how much fun it is to install these larger tanks in the SUV hulls.

I have the engine mounts relocated for the 1.8 engine. I had to cut the two front mounting blocks or backing plates to fit the new location. I also have made a template for locating the engine mounts for the next time I need to do this again.
I am now ready to do some grinding and prep work to get ready to lay some fiberglass.

Here are some pictures of the fuel tank area before I start laying the fiberglass. You can see the new support or stringer or rib that I made. I glued it in with 5200.

I removed the cowling and modified the dash area to fit the 2014 MFD. I did find that the trim gables to the handlebar grip were both frozen and the grip was damaged also. I had to replace all three parts. We are going to keep the trim system intact on this SUV. I also installed the start and kill switch from the 2014 VXR and also the throttle leaver and cable.
