  • SUV conversion project build #6 for Rob72 plus installing a 30 gallon fuel tank.

First of thanks Rob72 for the privilege to do your SUV conversion, Thank you.
Well here we go again build #6. We have another SUV 1200 here with a nice donor for the transplant. I will take many pictures and try to document everything I can. Rob72 brought the two skis to the shop on valentines day weekend so we know this will be a sweet build. It has gotten cold here in Jacksonville Florida but I will soon be able to take the donor ski out for a test run to make sure that everything is OK before the disassembly process.

Here is the 2008 donor ski. This ski hull will be for sale when the operation is done. This is a really nice hull in great condition.

Haha, I liked the comment about "this will be a sweet build since I dropped it off Valentine's weekend"! Getting excited, can't wait to see this come to fruition. Planning on getting offshore in the Gulf off of Englewood FL to catch some Grouper and catching Walleyes this summer in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. That 4 stroke is going to give me much better fuel economy and reliability over the old smoking 2 stroke...and with the addition of the 30 gallon fuel tank, my range should be amazing! Thanks again Handyman,

I worked on the MFD today. To me this is one of the most tedious parts of doing a conversion. I want to get it right so that it doesn't look like a hack job. This MFD from the 2008 FX is much larger than the SUV 1200. I started by first removing the reverse leaver handle and then the handlebar along with everything that is attached to it. Then I removed the choke control and the fuel valve. Then I remover the 4 bolts in the engine hatch cover and remover it. I removed the old MFD and drilled out the 4 rivets in the plate that the MFD mounts to. With all the parts removed I made a template of the FX MFD and traced it out on to the SUV. I proceeded to cut out the hole to fit the FX MFD. It took me a while to get it right. I had to cut out the new shape and once I got it cut out trial fit the engine hatch cover. I had to recess the FX into the SUV deeper so I took a high speed carbide bit and cut a grove around the new opening for the MFD so that it would set deeper into the SUV hull. The engine hatch cover needed to be cut out to fit the new MFD. I also had to heat up the engine hatch cover around the area of the MFD so that it would fit more closely to the new FX MFD. The FX MFD is not flat across the face of it but it curves outwards in the middle making things interesting. While doing all the test fitting I covered the FX MFD with masking tape to prevent scratching the face of it. I also had to make a hole in the left side of the engine hatch cover to install the little two button control for the FX MFD. I will need to drill a hole in the SUV to give access to the wire for this two button control. I will have plenty of wire under the engine hatch cover so that it can be removed and the connector for this two button switch can be accessed. The MFD will get sealed into the SUV hull and this will hold it in place. I did need to trim the top corners of the FX MFD so that it would clear the engine hatch cover.

That looks like a nice flush fit. Will you seal it in with marine silicone on final assembly?
