  • Engine mount template for SUV conversion

When doing a SUV conversion you need to relocate the engine mount location. There is two ways of doing the conversion. One way involves moving all 4 engine mounts and the other way involves moving only the front two mounts.
I have made myself a template for this. This template bolts to the original engine mount locations then you can mark the new location of the engine mounts. I made this so that when I do future SUV conversions I can mark the engine mount locations accurately and quickly to save time.
If anyone would like to have one of these let me know. I can make some for sale.

$15 Local pickup is always FREE.
$30 including USPS Priority shipping with tracking. I will only ship within the cont. US for this price.
Again local pickup is always FREE.
I do not add anything for the packing and handling for the template. You can go to www.usps.com and figure the shipping yourself if you would like. The shipping for priority shipping from zip code is 32246, the weight is 15 ounces and the size will be 30" x 3" x 1".
My cost of the material ($5), drill bit ($2), Tape measure ($5) drill or drill press (priceless) I charge $50 per. Hr. for my labor. Time to figure out the engineering for the template (.5 hr.) time to cut drill the template (.2hr).
I got out the calculator and it seems like I will have to sell more than 7 just to break even. (I have sold 0 to this date)
I would have to say that I am offering the template to the community to help out where I can. (not to make profit, although that would be nice to)
If you think the price is hi, You do have the option to make your own if you would like to save money.
I have even posted the dimensions for the template in one of the post as picture for anyone to see. You now have all the information to make your own if you prefer.
Hint: You can also just mark the holes on your hull with a sharpie using the measurements from the picture if you like without using or making a template.

I am getting ready to do this conversion and have read your how to a million times. Is it nessesary to remove so much of the inner hull?

Yes it is the easiest way. You need to get access to the engine mount plates that are embedded between the inner and outer hull to relocate them. then you may need to trim off a corner on the right front plate so that it will fit between the hulls in the new location. You need to only cut enough inner hull to get the job done, you do not want to cut out the area where the new mount locations will be.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Oh thank you! I'll probably hit you up for one of your pre-fabricated ones in a bit. Thought I had a deal for a Fx140 but it fell through.... So still on the hunt for my donor.

Give it time, you will find one that will make a good donor.

PM me with your email and I will send you a invoice through PayPal or send a check for $30 to Daniel Lewis by snail mail and once it clears I will ship out the template to you.

Handyman, thanks for sharing this template info. Now that 2017 has arrived, I have a very curious notion . . . what about using a brand new 2017 EX as a donor ski ?? OMG, yes I said a brand new ski. These can be had for just $6,599 currently, and they feature the all-new TR-1 three cylinder engine. So the BIG fly on the wall is - do you think it has the same mounting template as both the MR1 & 1800 share?? If yes, I think the low-cost, the fact that itís all-new, and the lack of fancy RiDE electronics makes the EX ski a viable donor candidate. At least this gives us access to a brand new engine & electronics - worth every penny when relying on it off-shore. Plus that gas-sipping, naturally aspirated TR-1 being more compact (easier to wrench on). 1049cc seems plenty to push the SUV.

Any thoughts on how we could definitively measure the TR-1 engine template? Call me a sick-child, but I'd seriously consider gutting a brand new EX if it meant having all brand-new innards in a SUV.

This is good stuff.Even if the engine mounting is the same (my guess is that it is) we would still need to confirm that the coupling on the engine has the same geometry as the MR1 & 1800 in relevance to the engine mount location. The engine mount height would also need to be close to the same height to the centerline of the crankshaft as the MR1 and 1800 engines.

I would like to have the 2017 EX 1049cc engine hanging over a SUV hull so that we could align the coupling and see where the engine mount would line up in the hull. This would be the best way to confirm that it would work.

I hope in time I will get a chance to do a conversion using the 2017 EX engine.

If you brought me a 2017 EX I could pull the engine and set it in a jig to see how it matches up. Let me know if I can help with this idea.

Sorry, I do not have access to a new 2017 EX, nor do I have any project plans of these sorts in my near future. The most recent thing I have done was to swap out an MR1 for a 1.8L inside a 2005 FX HO hull. This obviously required no hull mods. Now in hindsight, and after much more research, I'm convinced I could have also gone with a TR1 - again with no hull mods. In other words, I am 98% sure that the TR1, MR1 & 1.8L all share the same engine mount and coupling alignment geometry. The only thing that changes is the coupling flange itself (shape/size) and perhaps the matching impeller shaft. So the easiest route is to, in addition to the engine and electrical, is to grab also the entire donor's IB/coupler assembly, which might also dictate needing the matching impeller stator housing with shaft attached (whole drive train). So having access to a complete 1050cc donor would be best. In other words, what ever you do to make a MR1 or 1.8L fit into a SUV, this will be the same for the TR1. And since there aren't any low-priced crashed or used TR1's yet, I'm simply saying that at the EX entry-level price-point, I could indeed see buying one just for the purpose of repowering a decent SUV salvage. Food for thought.
