I have gotten another 2003 Yamaha SVU 1200 that I will be converting. I have bought a 2004 Yamaha FX HO and I also found and bought a 2005 Yamaha FX HO I will have to decide on which one that I will use as the donor for this SUV conversion. I am little concerned with the fuel consumption of the HO.
Could anyone give me ant ideas on the difference on the fuel usage between the FX and The FX HO, like range on tank that you can expect to get.

The 2005 FX HO Cruiser has 226 hours on it and has a complete dealer rebuilt pump ($1,950) and runs like new.

The 2004 FX HO runs but is missing the voltage regulator rectifier and the pump intake grate and the dash dose not display anything. The 2004 also has new SBT pistons and rings installed.

2003 Yamaha SUV conversion project #2 using the FX140 HO 4 stroke engine for fishing

      Here I go again.
I have gotten another 2003 Yamaha SVU 1200 that I will be converting to the 2005 Yamaha FX HO 4 stroke engine. I have the donor ski and will do a test run on the FX soon then I will be pulling the necessary parts needed for the SUV. This will be another fun project and will make a great fishing rig when finished.

I have started stripping the Yamaha SUV 1200 to get it ready for the FX 140 HO 4 stroke engine transplant. Checking things out I found the steering cable stiff and the reverse cable, well completely rusted and in need of replacing. I also started to take the handle bars apart so that I can start work on the dash MFD replacement. I found that a trim cable is frozen. The main trim cable checks out ok.
I ordered new steering and reverse cables for the SUV 1200 and they should be here next week. I also ordered 2 new push-pull trim cables that connect to the twist grip assembly.

Here is a video of the test run of the FX140 HO. I say that it passed the running test and is now ready to be disassembled and made ready for the transplant.

                Starting the build

Today I was able to remove the steering head from the skis and completely tore both of them apart. I compared the two of them to see if I would be able to use the FX steering head on my SUV. It took me about 7 hours but I made it work like a charm. I had to take the tilt handle from the SUV setup and used it to replace the one in the FX setup. The reason for this is that the FX setup the tilt handle sticks out about 2 inches farther and looks bad. also would interfere with the glove box storage compartment. I had to drill and tap the bottom of the FX setup to be able to use the steering cable clamping or anchoring bracket from the SUV. I also had to modify the bracket so that the tilt function would function properly. I also had to cut out the hole in the fiberglass a little larger on the top and bottom for clearance for the tilt function to work like it should. I used the pitman arm from the SUV on the FX setup. I also had to drill 2 new lower mounting holes to be able to mount the FX steering unit on the SUV. I will need to confirm that the steering cable has enough adjustment to be able to center the handle bars straight, that will come at a later time. The cowling still fits as it should.

This was allot of extra time and work when I could have just used the SUV steering setup but I liked the FX look and feel better plus now I can utilize the electronic sensor in the FX steering setup now.

I am now working on mounting the MFD so that I can put the cowling back on.

Engine mount template for SUV conversion

When doing a SUV conversion you need to relocate the engine mount location. There is two ways of doing the conversion. One way involves moving all 4 engine mounts and the other way involves moving only the front two mounts.
I have made myself a template for this. This template bolts to the original engine mount locations then you can mark the new location of the engine mounts. I made this so that when I do future SUV conversions I can mark the engine mount locations accurately and quickly to save time.

                        Gas / Fuel tank ideas

I would like to have 30 gallons of fuel in the hull for the long 70 mile trips offshore. Now is the time to do something about this before I start the conversion while the hull is bare. I have removed some of the foam from in the bow and it looks like I could gain about 12 inches of space in front of the original tank.

As you can see there is the place for the mount for the front tank straps that could be removed to allow for a larger tank to be installed.

I need to do some thinking on this.

I have cut out the header in front of the original fuel tank and have gained 9.5 inches to work with.
I have ordered a Moeller 31 gallon fuel tank that measures 32"L x 17.50"W x 14.00"H that I can make fit in the area. I will need to do some more cutting and shaping and lay some new glass in the area to finish it. I will also move the fill hose to a more convenient area. I will do this after I get the tank in my hands.
