  • Yamaha SUV 1200 engine swap mod idea to install a 4 stroke engine. Conversion #1

I have a 2002 Yamaha SUV 1200 with a new rebuilt engine and was thinking of installing a VX110 engine for better fuel mileage.
I have a 2008 VX Deluxe Jet ski set up for fishing and love the way the engine runs and the fuel consumption, it sips fuel.
I was think of buying another VX110 to pull the engine and everything else needed to support the engine to install in mu SUV.
Has anyone done this? If so any information would be helpful.
would I be able to use the current jet drive and couple the new engine to it?
I have all the tools necessary and know how to do this if it is possible.
I have found this site http://jetskifishing.co.za.dedi30.cp...net/blog/?p=44 that sounds like they have done this and I am trying to contact them also for information on what needs to be done to do the swap.
Anyone with information or ideas will be appreciated on this project.

put down on paper what this project will cost you and chances are it will not make financial sense imo. i looked into it before buying my suv, and i couldn't justify it. maybe you can get lucky and find a vx110 with a totaled hull and no water damage to the engine, but even then that ski will cost you thousands of dollars. the money you save on fuel won't pay for the donor ski for probably 10 years.
remember that your suv hull is a lot bigger and heavier than your vx hull so you will not get the same mileage with the vx motor in the suv hull. in dollars and cents, you might be positive $20.00 per tank of fuel with the 4 stroke vs the 2 stroke. say you have $4,000 in a donor ski, it will take you 200 tanks of fuel to break even. that's around 4,000 gallons of fuel to break even. not something that is economically viable imo. if you got a donor ski for next to nothing, it would make sense.
good luck to you if you do it though.

I was thinking more on the line of reliability and comfort and fuel economy over the long run not so much on the cost of the conversion. Also with the 4 stroke I would have further range. I would also be able to sell unused parts like the newly rebuilt engine and carbs I remove with less than 10 hours on it, the donor hull and trailer. Just thinking.

I picked up a 2002 Yamaha FX140 yesterday to use as a donor when I get ready to do the swap.

I also used my 2010 Prius to tow the jet ski home and the trip was 325 miles one way and I got close to 35 MPG. Now that is what I call economy for going fishing.

I did take the ski out to check it out today and it runs sweet. Did I tell everyone that I got stopped by the City Police for going to fast. Evidently the Jaguars have a game this weekend and you can only go slow between the Main street and Mathews bridges when they have a home game.

                  donor has been gutted.

I have the engine and pump removed from the donor jet ski. I will do a little cleanup and change out all the hose clamps with SS ones on the 4 stroke engine. Then comes the painful part, Taking my SUV out of service and removing the newly rebuilt 1200 cc 2 stroke engine. I sure hope that everything goes well so the SUV will be back running soon.

                    SUV has been gutted

I have removed the engine, wiring and pump from the SUV. I have started studying the parts and differences in the two drive trains.

2002 Yamaha SUV pump compaired to2002 Yamaha FX140 pump

I have studied and measured the two pumps and intermediate shafts and have decided what I am going to do to install the 4 stroke Yamaha FX140 engine as for the pump end. There is a 2 inch difference between the two setups both being 2004 year models.

The SUV pump has one impeller housing, this is where the wear ring is located.

The FX140 has two impeller housings, the second impeller housing is like a 2 inch spacer in front of the pump, making the total length of the pump 2 inches longer than the SUV pump. another words the FX140 pump will 2 inches longer from where it mounts to the transom plate than the SUV pump. If you remove the second impeller housing the two pumps look to be the same pumps.

Here is a picture of both pumps. The left is the FX and right is the SUV.

By using the FX140 pump unit with the second impeller housing you will need to do something about the difference in the length of the cables, trim steering and reverse. The length to the intermediate shaft will be ok.
By using the FX140 pump without the or the second impeller housing or using the SUV pump you will not have any cable length problems but the distance to the intermediate shaft will be 2 inches forward of the original mounting location.

Anyone can speak up if I am thinking wrong

                        intermediate shaft bearing

I an going to use my SUV pump so that I am not changing any engineering of the jet ski. Yamaha spent a lot of money designing the hull and pump setup and I am not as smart as their team.
I will be making a spacer to space the intermediate shaft mounting point 2 inches forward from its original location. I think that this is the simplest solution.
I will remove the rear bearing housing from the SUV intermediate shaft bearing and install it on the intermediate shaft bearing housing from the FX140. I need to do this because it is what makes the seal to keep water from entering the hull. I will also install a new hose that is 2 inches longer that seals the bearing housing to the hull pipe joint.

Here is the original intermediate shafts. The left is the FX140 and the right is the SUV both 2002 model.

intermediate shaft bearing with 2 inch spacers. I made the spacers by cutting three of the four corner bolt holes or ears off of the second impeller housing from the FX140. The impeller housing was corroded through badly, you could see pin holes through it so it was no good to use but made the right size spacers that I needed. I have basically moved the extra 2 inches from sticking out from the back of the hull to moving the intermediate shaft forward 2 inches. This will give me more room behind the engine and save me from extending the three cables on the pump.

i believe on the conversions i saw, they used the pump from the donor ski. i will try to find out the reasoning behind that.
